Betsson Group’s Shift to Scalable Crowdtesting

To strengthen product quality across global markets, I led Betsson’s first crowdtesting initiative — evaluating platforms like Testbirds and Applause through pilot cycles, benchmarking bug detection, scalability, and cost-efficiency. The goal: identify the ideal partner to align QA operations with Betsson’s rapid release cadence and compliance needs.

Evaluating Crowdtesting Through Real-World Pilots

In early 2025, I led a structured pilot program to benchmark multiple crowdtesting providers. Functional and exploratory tests across Greece and Argentina. Real devices & payment methods used in testing. Assessed bug discovery rate, communication, tester reliability. This gave us a transparent, data-driven foundation for Betsson’s long-term QA strategy.

Quality Assurance

Innovative QA methodologies implemented to ensure seamless user experience. Rigorous testing procedures to identify and resolve issues efficiently. Continuous improvement strategies for optimal performance and reliability.

Automation Testing

Robust automation frameworks developed for accelerated testing cycles. Comprehensive test coverage to enhance product quality and reduce time-to-market. Integration of cutting-edge tools for efficient and effective automation.

Security Testing

Stringent security protocols implemented to safeguard sensitive data and protect against cyber threats. Vulnerability assessments and penetration testing to fortify system defenses. Compliance with industry standards for secure software solutions.

Approach

To identify the right partner for scalable QA, I designed a structured pilot programme across multiple regions: this combined functional QA and exploratory testing on real devices, local networks, and live payment methods.

The approach ensured:

  • Coverage of critical betting journeys (registration, deposit, withdrawal, bet placement)

  • Benchmarking bug detection, tester reliability, and reporting quality

  • Market realism in restricted geographies such as Greece and Argentina

  • Light UX signal capture to surface friction in real user journeys

This staged approach created a transparent, data-driven foundation for Betsson's long-term crowdtesting strategy.

Phased Pilot Approach

Multi-Pilot Benchmarking

Ran pilots with both Applause and Testbirds across different markets.
Measured bug discovery, communication efficiency, and tester quality.
Validated compliance-sensitive flows such as login, AML checks, and payments.

Scope Expansion & Localisation

Extended testing to strategic releases in LATAM and Europe.
Focused on localisation accuracy, currency integration, and jurisdictional rules.
Introduced exploratory bug hunting alongside structured functional QA.

Integration into Release Cadence

Made crowdtesting a key step in frequent and smaller releases.
Validated new payment methods and native app versions.
Ensured real-world reliability across markets, devices, and connectivity conditions.

Decision Process

Through pilot benchmarking, I compared Applause and Testbirds across coverage, compliance and reporting quality. Applause stood out as the partner able to scale QA globally, ensuring faster releases, stronger reliability and alignment with Betsson’s product strategy.

Evaluation Criteria

Benchmarked bug discovery speed, tester coverage, reporting quality, and alignment with compliance requirements.

Testbirds Findings

Flexible model with fair pricing, but less maturity in handling iGaming compliance and weaker scale for strategic releases.

Applause Findings

Broader tester pool, faster triage, richer reporting, and stronger fit with Betsson’s regulatory + scalability needs.

Applause was selected as the scalable partner — enabling faster release validation and consistent QA across global markets.

Impact and Next Steps

Selecting Applause established a scalable QA model that now supports Betsson’s global release cadence. Crowdtesting is integrated into strategic launches and native app updates, ensuring quality and compliance across markets. This foundation not only strengthens product reliability but also creates opportunities to expand QA innovation and knowledge sharing in the years ahead.
